Application Of Activated Carbon in Agriculture

Wood based granular activated carbon is widely used in agriculture, and its unique physicochemical properties provide new ideas for soil improvement, crop growth promotion and agricultural sustainable agricultural development. The following are the main roles of activated carbon in agriculture:

Soil improvement

1.Soil improvement

The porous structure of granular activated carbon can significantly improve the physical properties of soil and increase the ventilation and retention of water. Its porosity is as high as 50~80%, which can increase the capillary pore and osity of the soil, thus regulating the water and air balance of the soil, and creating a suitable environment for microbial growth. In addition, activated carbon can also absorb nutrients in the soil (such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), reduce nutrient loss, improve the utilization rate of fertilizer, while absorbing harmful substances (such as heavy metals and organic pollutants), reduce their harm to crops and the environment.

2.Promote crop growth

Granular Activated carbon plays an important role in crop growth promotion. Studies have shown that activated carbon can promote seed germination and seedling growth, and improve crop yield and quality. For example, in rice flower culture, activated carbon significantly increased seedling height, root length, root number and fresh weight, respectively by 23.1%, 46.7%, 93.9% and 29.3%, respectively. In addition, activated carbon can also regulate the electrolyte balance of the soil, helping plant roots to better absorb water and nutrients, and promote plant growth.

3.Reduce water and nutrient loss

The adsorption of activated carbon can fix the effective components of flower fertilizer, so that it is slowly released, so as to reduce the loss of fertilizer content. This characteristic allows activated carbon to perform well in maintaining soil water and nutrients, helping plants use resources more efficiently.

4.For anther culture and haploid induction

Activated carbon is also used in anther culture, which is mainly used to induce pollen development into haploids, so as to rapidly obtain pure lines and shorten the breeding cycle. At present, activated carbon has been applied in the anther culture of many crops such as rape, potato, tobacco, corn.

5.Environmental remediation

Activated carbon also plays an important role in agricultural environmental remediation. Its high specific surface area and porous structure enable it to adsorb heavy metals and organic pollutants in the soil, thus improving soil quality and promoting sustainable agricultural development.

The application of wood based granular activated carbon in agriculture can not only improve soil structure, promote crop growth, but also reduce the loss of water and nutrients, and play an important role in environmental remediation. Its unique adsorption properties and physicochemical properties provide new solutions for the sustainable development of agriculture. In the future, with the deepening of research, the application potential of activated carbon in agriculture will be further explored.
