How To Use Activated Carbon To Improve Purity And Quality in The Food And Beverage Industry

In the pre-treatment stage, for pigments and odorous substances in raw water and raw material liquids, granular activated carbon can be used for filtration and adsorption. For instance, in drinking water treatment, activated carbon is filled in filter columns. When water flows through, it can remove residual chlorine and organic matter, improving taste. In juice processing, activated carbon adsorption is used to remove polyphenol pigments, preventing browning and maintaining a clear color.

During the production process, to tackle impurities in raw materials such as syrup and alcohol, powdered activated carbon can be used for adsorption through stirring, followed by filtration and separation. In the sugar industry, for example, an appropriate amount of powdered activated carbon is added during the syrup decolorization process. After full mixing and reaction, the activated carbon and adsorbed impurities are removed through plate-and-frame filtration, which improves syrup purity and ensures the quality of subsequent products.

Furthermore, it is necessary to select activated carbon with appropriate pore size and adsorption capacity based on the characteristics of the materials being treated, and control the dosage and contact time. This ensures efficient impurity removal without affecting the nutritional components and flavor of the food and beverages themselves, helping the industry produce high-quality products.
