Activated Carbon Fiber Felt: From Black Fabric To Universal Adsorption King

Activated Carbon Fiber Felt (ACF felt) is a porous functional material produced by first "felting" precursor fibers such as viscose, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) or pitch, then "carbonizing + activating" the web. It merges the flexibility of a textile with the ultra-high surface area of activated carbon. Looking like a thin black velvet cloth, it hides an "inner surface" >1 000 m²/g and a micro-pore population (1–2 nm) that accounts for more than 80 % of its total porosity-hence its nickname "a nanosponge you can touch".

Manufacturing roadmap: the four-step journey from "cotton" to "black gold"

Felting: carding and needle-punching staple precursor fibers into a 0.3–2 mm web that keeps its integrity in later steps.

Stabilization: heating under tension at 200–300 °C to cross-link linear macromolecules into a "ladder" structure and prevent melting during carbonization.

Carbonization: pyrolysis at 700–1 000 °C in N₂; non-carbon elements leave as CH₄, CO₂, H₂O, forming a graphitic micro-crystalline carbon skeleton.

Activation: selective "burn-off" with steam or CO₂ at 800–1 000 °C; micropores develop rapidly, >90 % of pore volume is <2 nm, and BET surface area jumps to 1 500–2 000 m²/g.

Structure-driven performance: six "killer features" of ACF felt

Ultra-high surface area: 1 000–1 600 m²/g, 2–3× that of granular activated carbon (GAC).

Lightning-fast kinetics: 10–20 µm fiber diameter gives short diffusion paths; gas-phase equilibrium in <30 s, liquid-phase in minutes-10-100× faster than GAC.

Trace-level efficiency: maintains high removal for ppm-level benzene, aldehydes, SO₂, NOx-ideal for indoor or in-cabin applications.

Thermal & flame resistance: ignition point >500 °C in air, withstands 1 000 °C in inert gas; meets FMVSS 302 non-burn rating.

Chemical robustness: >90 % strength retention at pH 1–14, electrically conductive, acid/alkali tolerant, ash content <1.5 %.

Easy regeneration: 10–30 min at 120–150 °C with steam or hot air fully desorbs VOCs; ≥90 % capacity retained after 100 cycles.

With its "fast, strong, thin, light" character, ACF felt is replacing traditional granular and powdered carbons and becoming an all-round player from automotive interiors to nuclear-grade purification. As functional composites and smart-manufacturing technologies advance, this "black fabric" will deliver even greater value in cutting emissions, capturing carbon and safeguarding health under the dual-carbon and Healthy China strategies.
